E10 Fuel, what is it and what should I do with my tools?
According to www.gov.uk, E10 petrol will become the standard grade in the UK from summer 2021. Below are some of the benefits to E10 fuel as listed on the Governement website.
E10 petrol contains up to 10% renewable ethanol, which will help to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with petrol vehicles and tackle climate change. Petrol in the UK currently contains up to 5% renewable ethanol (known as E5).
E10 petrol is already widely used around the world, including across Europe, the US and Australia. It has also been the reference fuel against which new cars are tested for emissions and performance since 2016.
Reducing emissionsCO2 is one of the greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change and the main benefit of E10 petrol is that it reduces overall levels of CO2-based vehicle emissions.
By blending petrol with up to 10% renewable ethanol, less fossil fuel is needed, helping us reduce carbon emissions and meet climate change targets.
The introduction of E10 petrol at UK forecourts could cut transport CO2 emissions by 750,000 tonnes a year – the equivalent of taking 350,000 cars off the road, or all the cars in North Yorkshire.
Renewable fuel blends, such as E10 petrol, are generally introduced to reduce overall CO2 emissions. They have little impact on emissions associated with air quality and public health.
The production of renewable ethanol for blending with fossil petrol also results in valuable by-products, including animal feed and stored CO2.
Is E10 suitable for my garden machinery?
As per www.gov.uk,
Some other petrol-powered equipment may not be compatible with E10 petrol including:
As with any petrol, we would still recommend not storing your machine with E10 petrol in it, to avoid any blockages in the fuel delivery parts of the tool. We also recommend that you store E10 fuel for no longer than 30 days in order to minimize the degree of fuel segregation. This is where the moisture in the air binds with the ethanol and settles on the bottom of the canister. This can cause running problems and shaking the container does not completely resolve fuel segregation.
In some tools, it may also be necessary to readjust the carburetor to compensate for the changed composition of the fuel.
For those that are worried about using the new E10 fuel, we would suggest the alternative, of using Aspen Fuel. Aspen does not contain any ethanol and is available in quantities of 1L, 5L and 25L in our store. This has a shelf life of 5 years so you can fuel your garden machinery hassle free. Here are a few more benefits listed below.
Cleaner air, cleaner lifeAspen alkylate petrol is virtually free from sulphur, benzene and solvents making it less harmful than regular petrol. You are breathing much cleaner air when working with your power tools and with these ingredients removed, the odour produced is minimal freeing you from the headaches this can cause.
Better for the engineAspen keeps your machines protected in use and in storage, starting easier, giving maximum performance and staying fresh for years. Regular petrol contains ethanol which is known to cause harm to small petrol engines. Aspen is ethanol free thus extending engine life and reliability.
Reduce toxic emissionsAspen contains significantly less harmful and toxic hydrocarbons which therefore reduces the impact your machinery makes on the environment.
